Neonatal Screening
Newborn screening is the practice of testing newborn for certain harmful or potentially fatal disorders that aren’t otherwise apparent at birth but if diagnosed early can make the difference between lifelong impairment and healthy development. E.g. If daignosis of hypothyrodism is delayed it can result in decrease in IQ by 5 points every month but if treatment started with in 13 days after birth then baby has normal brain development. In our hospital newborn screening is done for TSH, G-6- PD, Phenylalanine,Cystic Fibrosis, 17-OHP, Galactosemia Biotinidase.
